Now Trending In Kids' Bathrooms

Mar 24, 2016 5 min read

Do you have children? If you do, chances are you haven’t made it past the kids’ bathroom aisle in Target without having them ask if they can redo the bathroom in a Sponge Bob or Disney princess motif.  The problem is: what happens when the kids grow out of that phase, which could last anywhere from 2.2 seconds to a few years at most?  Would you want to redo a bathroom that often?  By choosing stylish yet kid-friendly designs that will grow with your child, you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble.  Following these design trends will help to ensure a happy kid AND a happy parent in the bathroom.

Keep Colors Consistent

Many kids will have a Jack & Jill bathroom in between two bedrooms.  Try to keep colors from the bedrooms flowing right into the bathroom if possible. Even if the two bedrooms don’t have the same colors, pick one from each room that will coordinate well with one from the other and pull those into the bathroom.  This will help maintain flow and continuity.

Ocean Life Makes Everyone Happy

One décor theme that does not seem to go out of style is the ocean.  Kids and adults both enjoy fish, tranquil waters, and a dolphin or two.  While this theme can be taken too extreme with painted sea animals plastered all over the walls, simply adding one or two simple touches of marine life can entice children to want to spend time in the bathroom for years to come.  Subdued ocean colors such as pale blue or turquoise can also add to the appeal while remaining current for a long time to come.

Glam It Up!

Girls young and old are attracted to the glamorous life.  A chic bathroom mixing sparkle, color, and style will be sure to please toddlers to teens and beyond.  Try a bold pink color on the wall but use simple white subway tile and classic fixtures to bring a more sophisticated touch.  Add a glistening chandelier to bump up the glam but also keep the room feeling refined.  Consider adding a makeup vanity in between a double sink to add much needed storage space for all of the makeup and hair supplies that will certainly accumulate as your girls get older.

Accessorize Now, Flip Back Later

If you want to convert an already done second bath into a kid-friendly space, try adding just a few simple accessories that will appeal to your children while still maintaining the integrity of the design you already have.  Add colorful, bold knobs and handles to a simple white vanity to make it more kid – approved.  This is very inexpensive and a fix that can be easily reverted back to the original when kids outgrow the replacements.  Another easy, inexpensive fix: replace an existing mirror above the sink with something colorful or funky in shape that will make your kids happy but can also be easily reset down the road.

Let Art Do The Talking

You can still have a very put-together, attractive bathroom that is also great for your children by simply adding art to the walls that your kids will love.  Kids will forget that the vanity and fixtures are chic and refined and will be drawn to colorful, playful artwork.  Try a framed motivational quote for older kids, canvased photos from a family trip for tweens, or even frame your little one’s own artwork for added interest.  Whatever it may be, let the walls speak to your children when the rest of the bathroom is on the quiet side.

Beach Bums

Who doesn’t like a trip to the beach?  You can bring the beach to your bathroom and please young and old alike.  Adding white bead board in the bathroom, for example, can give that coastal feel that will have you and your kids remembering the last family trip to the beach.  Choose pale coastal tones for the walls to add to the beach theme.  The nautical theme is also quite popular and can easily be incorporated with a simple anchor decal that can easily be removed down the road if it loses its appeal.

Let’s Get Started!

When designing a second bathroom to be used by children, it can often be difficult to decide which style to go with.  Your children might be tugging at your heart asking for that super trendy movie theme, while your head is probably begging you to go neutral and chic.  There is a common ground that can be found, and the certified bathroom designers at Dream Baths can help you find it.
