Bathroom Remodel Survival Tips

Mar 9, 2016 3 min read

Few people have ever said, “Wow, that remodeling project was so relaxing.  I want to do it again!”  Remodeling projects can be taxing regardless of how prepared you may be, how wonderful your contractor is, or how smoothly things go.  However, following a few simple tips can help you to survive a bathroom remodel and maintain your sanity in the end!

bathroom remodel survival tips

1. Have a Pre-Renovation Pow-Wow:

It is helpful to meet with your contractor before work begins to set expectations and be clear that everyone is on the same page in terms of design, timeline, etc.  This is a good time to ask your contractor what the normal working hours of his crew will be and ensure that those hours will be convenient for your family.  Also, it is important that your contractor has your contact information in case he needs to reach you during the day with questions/concerns about the project. You should likewise get contact information to be able to reach your contractor with any issues that might come up.

2. Will I Have a Bathroom During the Remodel?

In a home with only one bathroom, a bathroom remodeling project can be challenging.  No one wants to go weeks without showering or using the toilet.  While not all parts of your bathroom may be unusable at any given time, chances are you are going to need to move the party elsewhere for a while until the job is finished.  Check with your contractor if you may need to make stay accommodations with a hotel or family during the depths of the renovation.   If you have more than one full bath in your home, this may not be necessary.

3. Keep Dust & Dirt Down:

Any remodeling project is certain to come with its fair share of dust and dirt.  Tearing out walls, removing old bath tubs, and laying new flooring can be messy jobs.  Be sure there’s a plan set up with your contractor ahead of time to keep dust and debris under control.  Your contracting team should have plans in place, such as drop cloths laid from the exit of the bathroom to the exit of the home, or tarps in doorways to bedrooms on the same level as the remodel to keep dust from entering these spaces. Window ventilation is another good consideration.
