One aspect of a bathroom remodel that often gets overlooked is the choice of a medicine cabinet. There are two types of medicine cabinets to choose from: surface mount or recessed. Your medicine cabinet is a very functional part of the bathroom and when deciding which one you want as part of your bathroom remodel, it's important to note the consequences of choosing one over the other.

When searching for a great design in a medicine cabinet it might seem recessed or surface mount is just an option we get to select. However, there are limitations on how a recessed cabinet is installed. If the installation calls for the recessed medicine cabinet to be installed in an exterior wall, it probably will not work. The framing for recessed cabinets requires modifications that shouldn’t be done to an exterior wall.
If your bathroom remodel calls for the medicine cabinet to be installed on an interior wall, you should know why you would want a surface mount or recessed. Recessed gives you just a little more space which can open up a bathroom lacking space. On the other hand, it is easier to install a surface mount if the space difference is not a big deal to you. There are also individual aesthetic preferences that are entirely up to you.
Hopefully, the cabinet you like has the option of being recessed or surface mounted so it will not be a problem to change the design to a surface mount. It is always best to plan for this situation up front rather than to needing to reselect in the middle of installation.
