As a bathroom designer, one of the questions I get most often is some variation of “How can I make my small bathroom feel bigger?”
The honest answer is to knock down some walls and just create a bigger and more spacious bathroom, but not everyone has the budget to do a full-scale remodel. Making a small windowless bathroom look and feel like a large open room can be a tall order; however, there are some tricks designers use to create the illusion of more space. Here are several of the techniques I use to help a bathroom feel more spacious.
1. Clean and simple lines. I always keep the lines of cabinets clean and simple. Cabinets that are complicated feel bigger and bulkier. Using wall hung cabinets and open legs can also keep the space more airy.
2. Light colors. Stick to white, grey or another light color theme. Light colors help contribute to a space feeling more open.
3. Glass and Mirrors. The use of clear glass and mirrors is also a great method to keep the vision from feeling closed and heavy. Using a large mirror without framing and with sconce lights through the glass can help keep the reflection of light. The shower doors can also be a mirror glass which also gives a more open feeling.
4. Chrome fixtures. The use of chrome fixtures will help get the job done as well. The added sparkle makes a bathroom feel luxurious without adding bulky features.
