Small Bathrooms Can Live Large

Jan 5, 2016 4 min read

Small baths can live large when designed with care. Choosing the right materials, fixtures, and fittings is key, as is thoughtful space planning and a considered scale. Unless you are already living in a custom-built home with a luxurious, ample bathroom, then you probably wish that you had more space in your bathroom. Although some smaller bathrooms may seem cozy and simple, they’re often claustrophobic and constrictive to some people.

Aesthetic Effects from Style

The style of your bathroom plays a huge role in the look and feel of the room. You may not be able to change the size, but with a bit of visual magic, color change, and lighting, you can transform your small bath into a cozy and inviting escape. Use some of these decorating ideas to make your bathroom look and feel larger, even if it stays the same size.

Consider Color

Pale, soft colors often give the illusion of more space. By avoiding strong, exciting colors and replacing them with pastel tones, neutrals, and whites for backgrounds you are giving the room a softer, cleaner feel. Wallpaper with a white or light background will give the illusion of a more open space. Choose an open, airy design with whites, light blues and greens, and yellows to maximize the look of your small bathroom. Also, consider painting trim and moldings in a lighter color than the walls to again maximize the look of space.

A Little Illumination, Please!

Without taking up any counter space, you can add extra lighting to open up the look of your bathroom and add interest. Recessed can lighting can be installed into the ceiling and focused on any workspace. More expensive alternatives for bringing more light into the room would be skylights, larger windows, and countertop lamps. Also, avoid opaque window coverings. Instead, opt for translucent window shades or even stained glass to maximize the natural light in the room.

Expand The Ceiling

By adding lattice or crown molding design around the edges of the ceiling, you can create an illusion of a raised ceiling. By adding a skylight to the ceiling, this will not only open up the room but it will also add more lighting throughout the room as well. Paintings of decorative murals will also help open up the room.

More Mirrors!

If your space will hold it, get a larger mirror to place in front of the bathroom sink. By bringing the mirror all the way up to the ceiling, this increases the overall look of the room. The mirror will also reflect all the light in the room and pick up the color and pattern. You might also consider a collage of mirrors arranged artistically in the place of one large mirror. Adding a mirror directly across from a window will also give the impression of two windows in the same place –get the most bang for your buck!

Stay Clutter-Free

A clean, neat bathroom always looks larger and more spacious than a cluttered, dirty one! Have only essential items visible and put away everything else. Spend some time organizing storage areas in a linen closet or vanity to make the most of what you have. Clutter will only make a small room seem smaller. Recessed or floating cabinets are a good option because they leave visible floor space while hiding clutter.

While it is not always possible to add more space to a cramped bathroom, you can always add the illusion of more space. Utilizing these techniques can seemingly expand a small bathroom into a more inviting, usable space.
